What is a Domain?

A domain name is the unique name that you choose for your business. This is the name that you will be identified with if anyone searches your business. For example my domain name is empowering possibilties. Therefore a your domain name is your websites name. It is the address internet users will type in to search your website.

How to come up with a Domain Name.

Choosing a domain name is important for your website because it represents your brand or business online. When choosing a domain name my recommendation is that you consider the following:

  • The name should be unique
  • No one else identifies with it
  • The name should be short
  • Easy to remember
  • Avoid special characters so its easy to remember

How to check if your Domain name is available.

One of my favorite tools to check domain names is Bluehost. Since there are so many domain name options to choose from, the first thing you want to check is that your chosen domain name is still available. To begin, you will enter the domain name in the search box below and then click “Search” for your results. When the search is complete, if your domain name is available, you’ll be directed to a page where you can review and purchase it.

In the event your domain name isn’t available, Bluehost can provide several variations and extensions of that domain name for you to choose from. Type any name that comes to your mind and can fit your business below and see if that name is available. This is to ensure no one else has a website or domain that goes by that name.

Now that you know what a domain name is and the force behind choosing your domain name now let’s talk about domain extensions. What they are and why you should choose yours carefully.

What is a Domain Extension?

This is the part after the domain name and the “DOT”. Enough of the domains name and domain extension. Lets looks into what a URL is.

What is a URL?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A URL is a standard way of identifying things on the internet, such as a website, web page, file, or newsgroup. The first part of the URL, before the colon, indicates the method of access; for websites, this is designated by the letters HTTPS. The part of the URL after the colon is interpreted through the access method. For instance, our URL is https://www.name.com. The first part indicates the method of access to our website, and the second part, including the slashes, indicates the name of the resource, our domain name, and the location of the resource—our website.
